When is Ahoi Ashtami?
The answer
Monday, 2 November 2026
Kept by mothers for their children.
Why that day
- The tithi it is
- Kartika Krishna 8
Read the ordinary way: the day whose SUNRISE this tithi is running at.
And after that
Saturday, 23 October 2027
Kartika Krishna 8
Wednesday, 11 October 2028
Kartika Krishna 8
How this date is worked out
A festival is a position, not a date. The lunar month is named by the sidereal sign the Sun stands in at the new moon that opens it, and the tithi is the Moon's distance from the Sun in twelve-degree steps. Both come from the same ephemeris this site casts birth charts with.
North India reckons a month from full moon to full moon, so the dark fortnight carries the next month's name — the same day is Shravana Krishna Tritiya in Pune and Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya in Delhi. These dates use the northern reckoning, and the tithi is printed above so there is nothing to take on trust.
Why it is kept
Kartika Krishna Ashtami — the mothers' fast, kept for the children. It falls exactly four days after Karva Chauth and runs on the same rule: nirjala, and broken on sight of the stars, not the moon. That is its own rule — Ahoi opens at starlight, so it ends earlier in the evening than Karva Chauth does. In some houses women hoping for a child keep it too. Ahoi means the one who keeps the unmeant thing from happening.
The story behind it
The merchant's wife and the spade
A merchant's wife went to dig earth to plaster the house before Diwali. The spade killed a syahu's — a porcupine's — young.
The curse
Syahu Mata said: you have killed my child, now your womb will be closed. From that day her children did not live.
Turning back
Years later she admitted what she had done and set out to find Syahu Mata. On the way she served a Surahi cow.
Garud Pankhini
The cow and Garud Pankhini carried her to Syahu Mata — and on the way she saved a snake's young from the eagle.
The boon
Syahu Mata relented and opened her womb. The ashtami she asked for is Kartika Krishna Ashtami, and mothers have kept it since.
What to keep ready
- A picture of Ahoi Mata, or the figure drawn on the wall — with the syahu and her seven young
- The silver ahoi; in some houses a bead is added for each child
- A kalash of water, and a karva
- Eight puris, eight pue and halwa
- Water chestnut, radish and seasonal fruit
- Raw milk, rice, roli
- A string of pearls or silver to which one bead is added each year
- A lamp and incense
How the puja is done
1
The vow
Sargi or water before sunrise and the sankalp for the children's long life. Nothing after that, not even water.
2
Drawing the Ahoi
Draw Ahoi Mata and the syahu's seven young on the wall in geru, or put up the printed picture.
3
The evening puja
After sunset: a kalash of water on the chowki, the Ahoi picture, the silver string. Roli and akshat, a bhog of milk and rice, eight puris and halwa.
4
The katha
Hear the story of the merchant's wife and Syahu Mata with seven grains of wheat in the hand.
5
Arghya to the stars
When the stars come out, offer water to them from the karva. That is the signal — no waiting for the moon.
6
Breaking it
Touch the feet of the mother-in-law or the eldest woman of the house, take the blessing, and eat.
What to do
- Break the fast at starlight, not moonlight. Ahoi has no moonrise in it — many houses go hungry late because they treat it like Karva Chauth.
- Add a bead to the silver string for each child born; that is what the string is for.
- Make sure the syahu's seven young are in the picture — the story is theirs.
- The mother keeps the fast; the children do not.
- Hold seven grains of wheat while the katha is read, and keep them afterwards.
What not to do
- Do not dig earth today, and do not have digging done — that is where the story starts.
- Do not hurt any creature today; this vrat begins with the death of one.
- Not even water before the stars — it is a nirjala fast.
- Do not take the Ahoi picture off the wall until after Diwali; that is when it comes down.
- Leave the sharp work — scissors, needle, knife — for another day.
The aarti
Ahoi Mata ki Aarti
