Ashtakavarga — Overview — how the bindus are counted, what the totals always come to, and how to read your own table.

How the count works

Each of the seven grahas is scored by eight contributors — the other six, the graha itself, and the ascendant — giving every sign a count from 0 to 8, called bindus. The seven tables added together make the Sarvashtakavarga, whose twelve signs always total 337 in every chart ever cast. The average sign therefore carries about 28.

How to read yours

A sign above 30 is strong and a sign below 25 is not, and the comparison worth making is between YOUR twelve signs rather than against anybody else's chart. A transit through a high-bindu sign gives more than the same transit through a low one — which is the main thing the table is actually used for.

If you want to act on this

A remedy in jyotish is an act, not a purchase — a fast, a mantra, a donation on the right weekday. Where a formal ritual is called for, these are the three that apply: a puja performed on your behalf, a chadhawa offered at the temple, or an abhimantrit article energised with the mantra of the planet involved.

Not sure what this means for your own chart?

Ask the astrologer — it reads your chart, not a general rule, and answers in plain words.

Common questions
