Your Birth Chart

Your birth chart — what the diagram shows, how the North and South Indian styles differ, and how to find a graha in either.
0What the diagram is
The birth chart is a flat picture of the sky above your birthplace at your birth minute, drawn as twelve compartments. Each compartment is a house, each house holds one sign, and the grahas are written into the compartment whose sign they occupied. Nothing in it is symbolic — every position in the diagram is an angle that can be checked against an ephemeris.
The two styles, and why they look nothing alike
In the North Indian chart the HOUSES stay put and the signs move: the diamond at the top is always the 1st house, and the sign number written in it tells you the ascendant. In the South Indian chart the SIGNS stay put — Aries is always the same box — and the house numbering moves with the ascendant. The same chart drawn both ways looks completely different and contains exactly the same information.
How to read either one
- North Indian
- Houses fixed, signs move. Top diamond = 1st house. Find the ascendant by the sign number in it.
- South Indian
- Signs fixed, houses move. Find the box marked as the ascendant, then count clockwise.
- Both
- Count houses from the ascendant, never from Aries, unless you are reading a South Indian chart as a rashi chart on purpose.
If you want to act on this
A remedy in jyotish is an act, not a purchase — a fast, a mantra, a donation on the right weekday. Where a formal ritual is called for, these are the three that apply: a puja performed on your behalf, a chadhawa offered at the temple, or an abhimantrit article energised with the mantra of the planet involved.
Not sure what this means for your own chart?
Ask the astrologer — it reads your chart, not a general rule, and answers in plain words.
Common questions
- What is the difference between North and South Indian charts?
- In the North Indian chart the HOUSES stay put and the signs move: the diamond at the top is always the 1st house, and the sign number written in it tells you the ascendant. In the South Indian chart the SIGNS stay put — Aries is always the same box — and the house numbering moves with the ascendant. The same chart drawn both ways looks completely different and contains exactly the same information.
- Which chart style is more accurate?
- Neither. They are two drawings of the same computed positions; the reading does not change.
