Core Placements

Core placements — the five things read before anything else in a kundli, and why they decide how the rest is read.
0What is read first
Before any yoga, dosha or dasha, five things are looked at, and every later judgement is made against them. A yoga read without them is the commonest way to get a chart wrong — the same combination is a blessing in one chart and nothing in another, and these five are what makes the difference.
The five
- The lagna
- Which sign was rising — it fixes the houses, and therefore which houses every graha owns.
- The lagna lord
- Where the ruler of the whole chart has gone, and how it is placed there. When two chapters disagree, this decides.
- The Moon
- Sign and nakshatra — the mind, and the source of the dasha and every transit reading.
- The Sun
- Sign and house — the soul, the father, and standing in the world.
- The dignity of each graha
- Exalted, own sign, friendly, neutral, enemy or debilitated — the same graha does opposite things at the two ends of that scale.
Why a strong chart can still struggle
Placement says what is possible; the dasha says when. A chart full of well-placed grahas running a period owned by its weakest one will look, for those years, like a chart that has nothing. This is why a reading that names no dates is only half a reading.
If you want to act on this
A remedy in jyotish is an act, not a purchase — a fast, a mantra, a donation on the right weekday. Where a formal ritual is called for, these are the three that apply: a puja performed on your behalf, a chadhawa offered at the temple, or an abhimantrit article energised with the mantra of the planet involved.
Not sure what this means for your own chart?
Ask the astrologer — it reads your chart, not a general rule, and answers in plain words.

- Which planet is the ruler of the chart?
- The lord of the ascendant — whichever graha owns the rising sign. Where it sits and how it is placed is the first judgement made about any chart.
