What the lagna is

The lagna is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of birth. It is the only part of a chart that depends on the minute and the place rather than the day — the whole zodiac rises once in twenty-four hours, so a sign holds it for about two hours and a birth an hour earlier can be a different lagna entirely. This is why a birth time that is out by an hour makes the whole reading someone else's.
